What is the difference between a Safari and a Game drive you might ask? A Safari is an entire Tour that may include many game drives at various locations and parks, while a game drive is a single day trip while on a Safari.
The game drive is the most emotional experience the African Safari provides and is truly an “off the beaten path” activity which can be adventured in open savannah grassland, acacia tree forests, muddy roads, or now-to-be-discovered roads while in an all-terrain safari vehicle.
Technically a game drive is a trip in a park or reserve that gives one the opportunity to view wild animals, birds, reptiles and other wildlife in their natural habitat or environment as they go about their daily activities. It can be done either during the day or in the evening or as a full day’s journey, depending on individual preferences. Regardless, as you drive into the wilderness, you will be captivated by the magic of the savannah, with its rolling hills, surprise encounters, and infinite horizon.
Game drives are best done in the morning hours starting at sunrise as the animals are coming out of their hiding places to look for food. Late afternoon provides equal opportunities as the animals prefer to sleep with a full belly. However, a full day’s game drive provides the real opportunity to listen, breathe, and experience what the African Safari is…a chance to learn from the planet, the animals (all shapes and sizes) and interact with others like you who are curious about life.
Typically the drive lasts 2-3 hours starting at 6:30 (excellent sunrise time) until about 9:00 am. Afternoon drives start at 4:00 pm until 7:00 pm. This is a wonderful opportunity to take in the breathless sunset with the sweeping views and enjoy an aperitif before heading back to camp for dinner.
